According to The Atlantic, the Trump administration reportedly decided to shift the focus of its strategy from military attacks to a prolonged campaign of sanctions and economic pressure, hoping to force Tehran back to the negotiating table seriously and, at the same time, reduce the political exposure of the war. “We’re just trying to hold on until the midterms,” a Trump adviser admitted to the magazine.
The war has become a growing source of concern for the GOP. According to The Atlantic, Republican figures have urged the White House to end the conflict and limit its impact on the economy and their re-election chances, while some parliamentarians have been challenged by voters specifically on Iran. Trump also reportedly confided to political allies that, once the Strait of Hormuz is reopened, he would be inclined to declare victory and turn the page.
