(Adnkronos) – At least 50 people were injured in Noain, northern Spain, after some fireworks exploded among the crowd during the inauguration of the patron saint festival dedicated to San Miguel. Three men aged 41, 53, and 54 sustained burns and were taken to the hospital.

The incident occurred around noon, when the first rocket was launched from the town hall balcony to officially kick off the festivities. According to authorities, sparks would have triggered other rockets ready to be fired, causing them to launch prematurely and towards the square below, where numerous people were gathered.

Images broadcast by Spanish television show the crowd quickly moving away from the town hall as the fireworks explode. The patron saint festival of Noain, a town near Pamplona, lasts five days and includes processions and concerts. Despite the incident and the number of injured, the celebrations will continue as planned.
