EXCLUSIVE: Japan Min. Katayama to Visit AI Startups in California

26 Agosto 2026

Tokyo, Aug. 26 (Jiji Press)–Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama is considering visiting California later this month to inspect startups developing physical artificial intelligence technologies, Jiji Press learned Wednesday. Katayama is expected to visit AI robotics company Figure AI Inc. and Toyota Research Institute Inc., a research base of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. The visit is being arranged amid growing anticipation that physical AI, which controls robots and machines, can help address labor shortages and boost productivity in the manufacturing, logistics and nursing care sectors. It will also take place ahead of Katayama’s planned participation in a two-day meeting of Group of 20 finance ministers and central bank chiefs to be held in Asheville, North Carolina, from Monday. Under a growth strategy adopted by the Japanese government at a cabinet meeting in July, physical AI is considered a strategic area. The country expects public-private investments in the field to reach 10.5 trillion yen by fiscal 2040. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
