(Adnkronos) – Nearly 90,000 people have been told to evacuate or prepare to leave their homes as a large fire approaches the outskirts of Reno, Nevada. US media report that about 42,000 residents have received immediate evacuation orders, while another 45,000 have been asked to be ready. The “Hawk Fire”, which broke out this morning near Hawk Meadow Trail, west of the city, has already burned about 15,000 acres, over 60 square kilometers, and caused at least six injuries, three of whom were rescuers. Authorities reported that the human-caused flames were not yet contained and that some homes had been destroyed, without providing a precise count for now.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized the National Guard to support firefighting operations and law enforcement. “This is an active and rapidly evolving situation. I urge everyone in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the directions of local authorities,” he stated. Strong winds and extremely dry conditions are fueling the spread of the flames, which have reached urban areas on the outskirts of Reno, a city of about 280,000 inhabitants on the border with California.
