Iran, rial collapses to new low, over 2 million for one dollar

24 Agosto 2026

(Adnkronos) – The Iranian rial collapses to a new historic low on the free market, exceeding the threshold of two million rials for one dollar for the first time. This is reported by CNN, citing sites that monitor the performance of the Iranian currency, while Washington prepares to announce, through Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the details of a new economic crackdown against Tehran.

Bessent called the new offensive against Tehran an “economic D-Day” and announced what, according to the American administration, will be the “toughest sanctions in history” against Iran. Washington’s goal is to increase pressure on the Iranian economy and also target countries and entities that continue to have commercial relations with Tehran.

The currency collapse is part of an already severely compromised economic framework, with inflation and pressure on the cost of living increasing. According to the International Monetary Fund, the Iranian economy could contract by more than 5% this year.
