Fukuoka, Aug. 24 (Jiji Press)–Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima has said that he would not seek a fifth term in the Nov. 15 election. “I want to pass the baton to the next generation,” Takashima, 51, who is serving his fourth term as mayor in the southwestern Japan city, the capital of Fukuoka Prefecture, wrote in a recent social media post. “The office of mayor is a special position in which a wide range of powers, including control over budgets and personnel, are concentrated,” he said. “That is why people need to be cautious about having the same person remain in office for a long time,” he said.
