Pakistan, former prime minister Imran Khan back in prison after hospital checks

(Adnkronos) – Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan has been transferred back to prison. He had been taken to a hospital in Islamabad for checks after his family expressed concerns about his health. Doctors believe his condition is compatible with imprisonment, announced Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar. Imran Khan, the minister explained via X, underwent checks at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), “in the presence of doctors from Al Shifa Hospital,” and was then transferred back to Adiala prison this morning. He was visited by “a team of specialists,” including a cardiologist, an ophthalmologist, and an internist, he specified.

All this after the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered Imran Khan, imprisoned since 2023 on corruption charges, to be transferred within 48 hours to Al Shifa Hospital, a private hospital unlike Pims. According to the minister, authorities decided to change the facility where Imran Khan would undergo checks “in light of the situation created by PTI (Imran Khan’s party) activists along the road to Al Shifa Hospital.”

Imran Khan, 73, a former cricket star who embraced politics and founded the PTI, has always denounced a campaign of politically motivated charges. On Tuesday, reports the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, he was able to meet his sister Noreen Niazi for the first time since the beginning of the year.
