(Adnkronos) – The government of Taiwan will propose a record defense spending for 2027. President Lai Ching-te announced, through the presidential office, that “the total defense budget for next year, including both the annual and special budgets, will for the first time exceed 1 trillion Taiwanese dollars, reaching 1,122.5 billion Taiwanese dollars (35.2 billion US dollars).”
Defense spending will account for over 3% of GDP, “demonstrating Taiwan’s determination to strengthen its self-defense capabilities,” Lai added, emphasizing that “investing in national defense means investing in peace. We will continue to build a stronger defense force to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region.”
