(Adnkronos) – Venezuela’s public sector will work reduced hours to ease pressure on the country’s dilapidated power grid, interim leader Delcy Rodriguez said Wednesday. Authorities are seeking to ration electricity supply as domestic consumption has reached its highest level in a decade.
Increasingly frequent blackouts outside Caracas have sparked protests across the country in recent weeks. The reduction in working hours for public sector employees will involve “working on alternate days” and half-days for all employees, with the exception of essential services such as healthcare, Rodriguez said.
“On Tuesday, demand reached an annual peak of 15,726 megawatts, despite only about 12,000 megawatts being available,” Rodriguez added.
