(Adnkronos) – Mexico and Peru have re-established diplomatic relations, interrupted last November at the initiative of Lima, which had accused the government of Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum of interference in internal affairs. The foreign ministries of the two countries announced this in a joint statement. “Considering the historical ties of brotherhood, friendship, and cooperation that unite Mexico and Peru, they have agreed, on this date, to resume diplomatic relations between the two States,” the statement reads.
The crisis had erupted after Mexico City’s decision to grant political asylum to Betssy Chavez, former premier for former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo, who was hosted at the Mexican embassy residence in Lima. Chavez left Peru on Friday bound for Mexico, after obtaining safe conduct, Sheinbaum announced at a press conference, specifying that the transfer took place aboard a military plane.
