North Korea: Seoul, Pyongyang launches projectile towards Sea of Japan, possibly ballistic missile

(Adnkronos) – North Korea has launched at least one “unidentified projectile” towards the Sea of Japan, according to the South Korean military. “North Korea launched an unidentified projectile towards the East Sea,” the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, using the Korean designation for the Sea of Japan. The launch came a day after Pyongyang’s accusations against Japan, which it accused of transforming into a “belligerent state” as Tokyo strengthens its military presence in the Pacific area. “An object that could be a ballistic missile was launched by North Korea,” the Japanese Ministry of Defense reported in a message posted on platform X.

In the preface to Japan’s annual defense white paper, published Tuesday, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated that it is “imperative that Japan further strengthen and develop its defense capabilities with a stronger sense of urgency and crisis than ever before,” in light of the growing threats posed by China, Russia, and North Korea.

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un, stated Wednesday that “North Korean leaders will adopt further military options, clearly a consequence of the changes adopted by Japan,” according to a statement released by the official Kcna news agency.
