(Adnkronos) – The malfunction of an Israeli-managed well in the West Bank has caused a severe water crisis, affecting the villages of Beit Iba, Tell, Qusin, Beit Wazan, Sarra, Jit, and several villages in the Jenin area, in the northern West Bank, leaving at least 50,000 people without water. Iman Mahmoud Ismail, deputy head of the Beit Iba village council, west of Nablus, told Radio Alam: “A technical fault in the main pump caused a water outage affecting about 90% of Beit Iba village and the surrounding villages.” He explained that the well is located on land owned by Beit Iba, within Area A, administered by the Palestinian Authority; however, the management of the well is entrusted to the Israeli company Mekorot. “We were told that the repair of the fault will take a month,” he added.
According to activist Abdul Rahman al-Banna, there are “over 50,000 citizens who cannot find a glass of water to drink.” He told Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed newspaper: “We are thirsty in every sense of the word. We have exhausted every means without success, domestic wells have dried up, and water sources have become scarce, with consumption doubling during the summer.”
