Tokyo, July 31 (Jiji Press)–The Japanese government on Friday announced the appointment of Hirotaka Unami, director-general of the Finance Ministry’s Budget Bureau, as vice finance minister. He will succeed Hirotsugu Shinkawa as the top bureaucrat at the ministry. The government also appointed Takanori Aoki, director-general of the ministry’s Tax Bureau, as commissioner of the National Tax Agency to succeed Kazuhiko Ejima. The appointments will take effect Aug. 7. Atsushi Mimura, vice finance minister for international affairs, will remain in the post. Unami, 61, joined the Finance Ministry in 1989. He held such posts as secretary to the prime minister and director-general of the finance minister’s secretariat before taking up his current position in July 2024. Aoki, 59, entered the ministry in 1989. He assumed his current post in July 2023 after serving in positions including deputy director-general of the finance minister’s secretariat and director-general of the secretariat.
