(Adnkronos) – Artificial intelligence will make the processing of asylum applications, visas, and residence permits in Germany faster and more efficient, according to a bill approved today by Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s cabinet.
Given the consistently high number of applications and limited staff capacity, the project also aims to unify administrative practices across the country.
The new law on immigration administration with artificial intelligence (Kimvg) aims to establish the data protection framework for the development and practical use of intelligent analysis and evaluation systems.
In the future, authorities such as the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, municipal immigration offices, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will have the legal power to specifically use data collected from asylum applications to train, validate, and test artificial intelligence models.
Furthermore, already concluded proceedings will be analyzed across different files to gain generalizable knowledge on decision-making structures, harmonize processing standards, and identify streamlining opportunities.
The new rules will also allow authorities to perform automated comparisons with Internet data.
Should there be well-founded doubts about the veracity of information relevant to the decision-making process, publicly accessible data on the internet can be compared with information provided by applicants.
However, the legal assessment and final decision in each specific case will continue to be, without restrictions, in the hands of the officials responsible for the dossier, for whom the algorithms will serve only as a support tool.
