(Adnkronos) – As of July 1st, 410 people in Germany were classified by the German Federal Criminal Police Office (Bka) as potential Islamist threats. This was reported today by the Rnd media group, cited by Dpa.
These are individuals linked to terrorism or Islamist extremism who are considered capable of committing serious acts of violence, including attacks. Another 65 people are classified as potential far-right threats and 17 as potential far-left threats. The reasons for including or removing individuals from the list vary and are assessed on a case-by-case basis by the German state police, the Bka clarifies, according to the article. The number is therefore subject to fluctuations and, taken in isolation, does not provide an overall indication of the threat level, it specifies.
The data emerges just days after the attack on Berlin Pride, where on Saturday evening a twenty-one-year-old born in the German capital, of Lebanese origin and with known ties to Islamist extremism, allegedly drove a van into the crowd on the sidelines of the Christopher Street Day demonstrations. One woman was killed and 29 others were injured. The alleged attacker then stabbed several passers-by with a bladed weapon, presumably a machete. He was killed on Sunday during a police operation. The attack has sparked a debate in Germany about the need for stricter measures against individuals classified as extremist threats.
