(Adnkronos) – The photographic exhibition “Embracing the Infinite. The Eternal Quest of Giuseppe Tucci”, dedicated to the figure of the great orientalist, explorer, and Tibetologist, was inaugurated on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the prestigious Chinggis Khaan National Museum, in the presence of the Italian Ambassador to Mongolia, Giovanna Piccarreta. The exhibition will remain open to the public until August 5, 2026.
The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Beijing, Federico Roberto Antonelli, John McCourt, Rector of the University of Macerata, Tucci’s hometown, and the Deputy Director of the Chinggis Khaan Museum, Erdmaa Dagva. Also present were the exhibition’s scientific co-curator, Oscar Nalesini, a researcher at ISMEO – International Association for Mediterranean and Oriental Studies – Professor Dulam Sedenjav of the National University of Mongolia, Lawyer Gianfranco Borgani (Arte Nomade), and Mongolian researcher Batbayar Dorj. The Minister of Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth of Mongolia designated State Secretary Bat-Erdene to participate. Ambassador Giovanna Piccarreta read the message sent for the occasion by the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli.
THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition, curated by Oscar Nalesini and Cristiana Turini, and previously displayed in Macerata in 2024 and Beijing in May 2026, was organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in Beijing and the University of Macerata, in collaboration with ISMEO, the Italian Embassy in Mongolia, Cinecittà–Istituto Luce, the Museum of Civilizations in Rome (MUCIV), with the patronage of the Municipality of Macerata and the support of the Ministry of Culture (MIC).
The exhibition traces the extraordinary intellectual and scientific adventure of Giuseppe Tucci: among the many labels attributed to him (linguist, philologist, Tibetologist, Sinologist, explorer), that of a total scholar, thirsty for knowledge and guided by the fascination of the unknown, stands out. Through 66 photographs and numerous documentary contents, the exhibition restores the profile of a man who considered knowledge as a direct encounter with cultures: eight expeditions to Tibet between 1928 and 1948, five to Nepal between 1929 and 1954, and archaeological campaigns in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran starting from the 1950s.
To enrich the exhibition for its stop in Mongolia, there will be a screening of the short film “In the Steppes of Mongolia” by Istituto Luce – Cinecittà – with commentary by Giuseppe Tucci and an unpublished panel illustrating the relationship between Tucci and Mongolia.
