(Adnkronos) – Bilateral ties, training within the framework of Italy’s 5.5 billion Mattei Plan to propel Africa’s development, combatting illegal immigration, the quest for “sustainable diplomatic solutions” stability and freedom of navigation in the Middle East amid a widening regional conflict were at the centre of phone talks on Thursday between premier Giorgia Meloni and Egypt’s president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Meloni’s office said in a statement.
Meloni and al-Sisi “reviewed various aspects of bilateral relations at the political and economic levels and within the framework of the Mattei Plan, especially in the field of technical and vocational training, as well as their joint efforts to fight illegal immigration,” said the statement, noting that the phone talks took place on Egypt’s national day.
“In light of the challenging regional context, the two leaders agreed to remain in close contact, with the aim of aiding the search for sustainable diplomatic solutions that can guarantee stability in the region and reaffirm the key principle of freedom of navigation,” the statement said referring to current blockades and attacks on shipping in key the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea waterways.
