(Adnkronos) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has condemned the new crackdown by the Nicaraguan government against civil liberties, after President Daniel Ortega announced his intention to no longer call elections to prevent the opposition from winning.

“I call on the authorities to reopen civic space and restore the rule of law,” Turk said in a statement. The High Commissioner stressed that “people of all political persuasions must be able to vote and run in elections, in line with Nicaragua’s international human rights obligations.”
