(Adnkronos) – Russia has expelled Italy’s military attache in Moscow and one of his associates in an injustified “act of blatant retaliation” for the explusion earlier this month from Italy of two Russian military attaches whom Rome prosecutors accused of spying, foreign minister Antonio Tajani wrote Monday on X.
“The Russian Federation has expelled, without reason, the Italian military attache in Moscow, along with one of his associates. This is an act of blatant retaliation for the expulsion from Italy of two Russian military attaches, who were caught red-handed while carrying out espionage activities that harmed our national security,” read the post.
The Italian government on 9 July announced it would expel two military attaches at the Russia embassy “within three days” who were allegedly involving in spying, in a move which followed the arrest of two people – including a former Italian intelligence agent – accused of passing classified information to a Russian agent.
