(Adnkronos) – The Philippine armed forces have accused the Chinese Coast Guard of hitting a Filipino sailor with a baton near a grounded ship that has long served as a garrison for Manila in the disputed South China Sea. According to the statement released by the Philippine army, a Chinese rigid-hulled inflatable boat with eight men on board surrounded and took photos and videos of the Brp Sierra Madre, which is located on the disputed Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands archipelago. When two Philippine inflatable boats were sent to ward them off, the Chinese sailors “reacted violently and aggressively by hitting a member of the Philippine Navy personnel on the head with a wooden baton, causing injuries,” according to Manila’s military authorities.
