Nigeria: dozens drowned in a river in the northwest

(Adnkronos) – Dozens of people have drowned after a boat capsized in Jigawa state, northwestern Nigeria. Authorities told AFP. According to police spokesman Shi’isu Adam, up to 40 people died yesterday, “including women and children, as their boat crossed the river.” So far – he added – six bodies have been recovered. Rescuers provided a lower toll, stating that five people have been confirmed dead and up to 20 are still missing, while 15 passengers have been rescued.
