(Adnkronos) – A Chinese human rights lawyer, who fled China in 2019 and arrived in the United States on a tourist visa where he applied for asylum in 2020, has been arrested by ICE. Wu Shaoping, who worked as a delivery driver while continuing to be involved in the fight for human rights in China, was stopped on Wednesday by ICE agents in Pennsylvania while making a delivery. Wu presented a copy of his asylum application to the agents, explaining that he had entered the country legally, reports the Guardian, citing a friend who was able to speak with him in the detention center.

ICE agents arrested him anyway, transferring him to a detention center, the newspaper adds, emphasizing that there are now fears that Wu will be repatriated to China where he risks arrest and indictment.
