(Adnkronos) – Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni expressed the government’s “deepest condolences” for the victims of a fire that broke out at a children’s care home in the Algerian capital, Algiers early on Thursday, in which at least 11 people died and a further 19 were injured.
“On behalf of myself and the Italian government, I express my deepest condolences for the victims of the tragic fire that struck an orphanage on the outskirts of Algiers,” Meloni wrote on X.
“Our closeness goes out to the families of the victims, to the injured, and to all those who are experiencing hours of anguish,” Meloni continued.
“Italy stands in solidarity with the Algerian people and President @TebbouneAmadjid in this moment of such great sorrow,” Meloni underlined.
Algeria’s authorities have not given the victims’ ages and the cause of the fire have not been disclosed.
The blaze broke at out around 3.30 am at the childcare facility in the Mohammadia suburb of Algiers, according to officials.
Algeria has been in the grip of a heatwave in recent days, with civil protection units fighting over 900 fires nationwide since 8 July, according to state news agency APS.
