(Adnkronos) – The United States House of Representatives has approved with a broad bipartisan majority the bill that would make daylight saving time permanent across the country. The Sunshine Protection Act of 2025 passed with 308 votes in favor and 117 against and provides for the abolition of seasonal time change, maintaining daylight saving time as the standard time throughout the year. The measure, supported by President Donald Trump, now goes to the Senate for consideration.
Trump called the bill “very important,” arguing that changing the clock twice a year incurs costs of “hundreds of millions of dollars” for citizens, cities, and states. “I will work very hard to see the Sunshine Protection Act become law. It’s time for people to stop worrying about the clock, not to mention all the work and money spent twice a year for this ridiculous procedure,” the president wrote on Truth Social.
The text, introduced by Florida Congressman Vern Buchanan, is supported by several members of both parties, who cite possible benefits for public health, road safety, tourism, and outdoor activities. Some opponents, including Republican Tom Cotton, have warned that permanent daylight saving time could lead to excessively late sunrises in winter, forcing students to go to school in the dark.
