(Adnkronos) – In June, deaths in Germany increased by 32% due to a record heatwave compared to levels recorded in the previous four years. The German statistical institute reports this, explaining that, nationally, between June 22 and 28, approximately 23,900 people died, an increase of 7,100 compared to the previous two weeks. Germany was not spared from the record heatwave that hit Western Europe in June, with temperatures in some parts of the country exceeding 41°C.
Official data released today revised upwards the previous estimate by the German statistical institute, which spoke of approximately 6,800 heat-related deaths during the heatwave. Between 2022 and 2025, the estimated number of annual heat-related deaths varied from approximately 2,600 to 4,900, according to the statistical agency. According to the report, the years 2018 and 2019 recorded the highest number of heat-related deaths to date, with 8,400 and 6,900 victims respectively.
