8 Luglio 2026

(Adnkronos) – The European Parliament praises Moldova for its constant commitment to reforms related to accession to the European Union, despite continuous foreign interference led by Russia, according to a report on the country’s progress towards EU entry adopted by the plenary with 505 votes in favor, 115 against, and 45 abstentions. MEPs welcome the recent opening of accession negotiations on the fundamental thematic cluster, which includes the judiciary, fundamental rights, freedom, security, and financial control, and invite the European Council to open all negotiation chapters without further delay, following a merit-based approach and preventing the process from being blocked by bilateral issues.

The document highlights progress in justice sector reforms and the fight against corruption, prioritizing the fight against the influence of oligarchs in Moldovan political, economic, and media life. The European Parliament issues a strong warning about continued Russian pressure on Moldova’s internal affairs and democratic processes, aimed at dividing society regarding the European accession path: MEPs call on the EU and Member States to strengthen support for institutional resilience, cybersecurity, and independent media.

Regarding the Transnistria region, the text reiterates commitment to Moldova’s territorial integrity and calls for Russia to withdraw all military personnel, equipment, and ammunition from the area. On the economic integration front, the report positively assesses Chisinau’s rapprochement with the EU single market and encourages further steps towards ambitious and sustainable trade liberalization. Finally, concerning energy, parliamentarians welcome the Moldovan government’s plans to achieve complete independence from Russian resources.
