(Adnkronos) – A man with a Tibetan flag and signs against the Chinese government set himself on fire in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The man was captured by UN surveillance cameras displaying a Tibetan flag and signs against the Chinese government on a sidewalk at the intersection of 43rd Street East and First Avenue, before setting himself on fire around 7:00 PM, sources cited by American media reported.

The footage published on the New York Post website shows the protester, identified by a friend as Lobga Rangzen, wearing a full monastic robe, planting a Tibetan flag on the sidewalk. He then set himself on fire along the busy street during the evening rush hour.

Rangzen, who had lived in the United States for about 20 years, collapsed to the ground less than a minute after being engulfed in flames. He was transported shortly after to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to New York police.
