Moldova, PM Munteanu’s surprise resignation, government falls

3 Luglio 2026

(Adnkronos) – Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has surprisingly announced his resignation after just over eight months at the helm of the government. “The moment I realized I could no longer perform my duties in accordance with my principles and convictions, I decided to resign,” he wrote on Facebook, without specifying the reasons for his choice. The Prime Minister’s resignation automatically leads to the fall of the entire executive.

The decision – local media explain – could be linked to recent scandals involving the MoldAtsa Civil Aviation Safety Authority, alleged cases of corruption in public administration, and some contested appointments related to a relative of President Maia Sandu. The head of state rejected any hypothesis of interference, stating that Munteanu always had “full freedom” in leading the government, and announced that next week she will propose a new candidate for the position after consultations with parliamentary groups.
