(Adnkronos) – The United States is preparing for what could be its hottest July 4th weekend ever, with a widespread heatwave already affecting over half the country. While meteorological agencies and local authorities recommend staying indoors and taking all necessary precautions, President Donald Trump does not seem deterred by the record temperatures. “It’s going to be about 42 degrees, and I’m going to give a very long speech, just to show that I can do anything,” he declared, presenting his address for the “Salute to America 250 Celebration & Fireworks” event, which will be held on Saturday at the National Mall.
According to forecasts, the U.S. capital could reach 42 °C, surpassing the previous record of 37.8 °C set in 2019, as part of an extensive heatwave fueled by the so-called “heat dome.” Between the Midwest and the East Coast, maximum temperatures are expected to range between 39 and 42 °C, with perceived values even higher due to humidity. Over 300 temperature records are anticipated by Saturday, including daily highs and unusually high nighttime lows, with deviations of up to 11–17 degrees from seasonal averages.
In New York, where a large influx of people and security personnel is expected over the weekend, also for the wedding between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden, temperatures could approach 38 °C. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called the situation “extremely dangerous,” arranging for the opening of cooling centers and the deployment of mobile units with healthcare staff to assist the most vulnerable citizens. Similar measures have been adopted in other cities, while in Philadelphia the July 4th parade has been scaled back, and in Nashville, water bottles will be distributed to the homeless.
