(Adnkronos) – Three people died from suffocation during celebrations in Mexico City for the Mexican national team’s victory against Ecuador in the round of sixteen of the FIFA World Cup, which led over a million people to pour into the streets of the capital. Among the victims, according to local authorities, are a 19-year-old girl, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man. The three were rescued unconscious in different areas of Paseo de la Reforma, subjected to cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers, and transported to the hospital, where they were subsequently declared dead.
The mayor of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, expressed her “deepest condolences” to the victims’ families, assuring the municipal administration’s support and inviting fans to “always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy.” The celebrations erupted after the 2-0 victory over Ecuador at the Azteca Stadium, which gave the team led by Javier Aguirre their first access to the World Cup quarter-finals since 1986. Thousands of people gathered especially near the Angel de la Independencia, the epicenter of the festivities.
