Venezuela, USGS estimates: earthquake victims could be over 10,000

(Adnkronos) – More than 10,000 people may have lost their lives due to the earthquake that struck Caracas in the past few hours. This is revealed by estimates released by the US Geological Survey, according to which there is a 44% probability that the death toll from the Venezuela earthquake will exceed 10,000 people and a 30% probability that it will exceed 100,000.  

The agency, which is part of the US Department of the Interior, has issued a “red alert” on its website regarding casualties and economic losses caused by the earthquake. “A high number of casualties and extensive damage are probable, the disaster is likely widespread,” the USGS stated.
