China, exhausted camel forced to ‘work’ with tourists, controversy after video from the northwest

(Adnkronos) – A camel struggling to stand on its feet, exhausted, to the point of ‘crying’. From China, the sad story of a camel that seems to be forced to ‘work’ among tourists until exhaustion is making its way around the world. The South China Morning shines a spotlight on what allegedly happened in Xinjiang, in the northwest of the Asian giant, with a reconstruction based on a video circulated mid-month on social media by a blogger who captured the camel’s cries, forced to carry a tourist for her ‘photo opportunity’, to remain ‘on duty’ to allow a tourist to take home her photo of the day from what is known as ‘Devil City’.

The blogger clarified that she was distant from the camel and was shocked by what she witnessed. “I’ve heard other camels ‘cry’, but this time it seemed different. It seemed absolutely exhausted – she recounted – Every time it tried to get up, it immediately bent back down on its legs from fatigue. But the owner forced it to get back up.” The South China Morning Post reports of enraged users, between anger and indignation. “Tourists take photos, oblivious to the lament, to the cry for help coming from the camel, it’s truly disheartening,” someone commented.

The blogger said she reported everything to the local authorities. And the newspaper reports on the intervention of local tourism authorities and a veterinarian’s diagnosis showing that the camel had a leg injury and was in a state of fatigue. “We have ordered all camel owners to suspend activities and treat injured camels – the authorities state, according to the newspaper – Camels must undergo regular checks, and in the future, rotation is necessary to ensure adequate rest.”
