Japan, weak yen and tourist boom, Tokyo quintuples cost of entry visas

22 Giugno 2026

(Adnkronos) – Japan has announced the decision to quintuple the cost of entry visas for foreign citizens, with the first tariff update since 1978. From July 1st, the single entry visa will increase from 3,000 yen (approximately 16 euros) to 15,000 yen (approximately 81 euros), while the multiple entry visa will rise to 30,000 yen (approximately 160 euros), compared to the current 6,000 yen (approximately 32 euros).

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi explained that the revision was adopted to “reflect inflation and exchange rate fluctuations,” adding that no immediate impact on tourist flows is expected. The measure comes in a context of a particularly weak yen, near its lowest in 40 years, but also a strong recovery in international travel. Last year, Japan recorded record tourism numbers, with 42.7 million visitors. In parallel, Parliament has also approved an increase in other fees related to residence permits, as part of an alignment with costs applied in other G7 countries.
