Narita Airport Shows Autonomous Cargo Towing Test

10 Giugno 2026

Narita, Chiba Pref., June 10 (Jiji Press)–The operator of Narita International Airport demonstrated autonomous cargo towing in a restricted zone at the airport in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, on Wednesday. Aiming to introduce a practical Level 4 driverless freight transportation system for the 7-kilometer road section connecting the north and south cargo areas by March next year, Narita International Airport Corp. has been testing two self-driving tractors supplied by Toyota Industries Corp. and Nagase Techno Service Co., respectively, since March to identify technical and infrastructure challenges to tackle. In the day’s demonstration, one of the vehicles hauled cargo containers and container carriers weighing 7 tons in total at a speed of 9 kilometers per hour. “We expect autonomous driving technologies to help us cope with labor shortages and cut costs,” an official at the airport operator company said.
