Tokyo, June 5 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s inflation-adjusted real wage index rose 1.9 pct in April from a year earlier, up for the fourth straight month, labor ministry data showed Friday. The increase reflected stronger nominal wage growth as well as a slower consumer price rise thanks to the resumption of government subsidies aimed a lowering gasoline prices amid Middle East tensions, among other factors. The consumer price index excluding imputed rent, which is used to calculate the real wage index, rose 1.5 pct in April, far smaller than the 4.1 pct increase a year earlier, due to the abolition of the provisional gasoline tax surcharge and the gasoline subsidies. Nominal wages, including base pay and overtime, increased 3.5 pct to 312,425 yen on average, marking the third consecutive month of growth exceeding 3 pct. Regular pay, including base salaries, grew 3.4 pct to 277,916 yen. Nominal wages for full-time employees, including regular workers, rose 3.9 pct to 403,170 yen, while such pay for part-timers was up 2.8 pct at 114,921 yen. Average hourly pay for part-time workers rose 4.9 pct to 1,436 yen. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
