(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani has expressed “deepest condolences” to the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon and to Belgrade after a Serbian soldier serving with UNIFIL died on Thursday from injuries sustained in a mortar shelling of his position near Marjayoun in southeastern Lebanon which wounded two other UN peacekeepers.
“I express my deepest condolences to the @UNIFIL_ contingent and to (Serbia’s) government in Belgrade for the killing of a Serbian soldier following an attack last night on one of the contingent’s bases,” Tajani wrote on X.
“My closeness also to the two injured Blue Helmets from Spain and El Salvador,” Tajani continued.
UNIFIL said two other peacekeepers were wounded in the overnight attack but did not say where the shells originated, stating that it had opened an investigation into the incident.
“#UNIFIL_ military personnel work with professionalism and dedication to ensure peace and provide assistance to local communities in a war-torn territory,” Tajani went on.
“Their safety must always be guaranteed. We condemn every form of violence and call on all parties to ensure the security of UN staff and facilities,” Tajani underlined.
