(Adnkronos) – The US armed forces have coordinated the transit of about 70 commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz in the last three weeks, despite the stalemate in negotiations to end the conflict with Iran. American officials told the New York Times that most of the vessels crossed the passage with their transponders deactivated to avoid detection. US authorities did not specify the type of ships involved or the exact routes, but industry analysts highlighted that at least one of the ships stayed closer to the Omani coast and away from the Iranian one.
Despite American assistance, maritime traffic remains well below pre-military escalation levels. Before the joint Israeli-American attacks against Tehran, the strait was crossed by over 100 commercial ships every day; today, with passages coordinated by Washington, the average is three per day. The continuity of crossings, however, suggests that there are shipowners willing to take the risk to reach or leave the Persian Gulf, where numerous units have been blocked for weeks. The corridor coordinated by the United States also represents an alternative for operators who do not intend to request authorizations from Iran or pay tolls for transit.
