(Adnkronos) – The second tranche of documents relating to Peter Mandelson’s appointment as UK ambassador to the United States will be published today, according to three sources involved in the process who spoke to the BBC. Although Downing Street has refused to confirm the publication date, a government spokesperson said that the latest set of documents “will be among the most voluminous ever presented to Parliament”. Lord Mandelson was removed from his ambassadorial post last year following new revelations about the extent of his relationship with financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sex offenses.
In February, MPs voted to compel the government to publish all documents related to the appointment. Initially, the government had opposed the motion, arguing that it did not want to publish material that could harm national security or diplomatic relations. But it eventually agreed to first send sensitive documents to the Intelligence and Security Committee, which would decide what could and could not be published. The first set of documents was published in March.
