(Adnkronos) – Itay has “strongly condemned” a Russian drone involved in an attack on Ukraine which hit an appartment block overight in Nato member Romania, in the eastern city of Galati, sparking a fire and injuring two people amid growing concern over Russia’s wider campaign of hybrid warfare across Europe.
“I strongly condemn the violation of #Romania’s airspace by a Russian drone, which struck a residential building in the city of Galati,” Tajani wrote Friday on X (formerly Twitter).
“Once again, the Italian government calls on Russia to commit seriously to a just and lasting peace. My solidarity to the Romanian government and to foreign minister @oana_toiu (Toui Oana),” the post continued.
Romania summoned Russia’s ambassador on Friday, with the foreign ministry denouncing the “grave and irresponsible escalation” and “serious breach of international law” by Moscow. The ministry said it had asked Nato speed up the transfer of anti-drone systems while Romania’s president Nicusor Dan said he had asked the foreign ministry to prepare a package of measures against Moscow “proportionate to this very serious situation”.
Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte deplored Russia’s “reckless behaviour”, calling it “a danger to us all”, while the European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned the incident in Galati as “a flagrant and serious” violation of Romania’s sovereignty and European airspace.
