(Adnkronos) – Two Italians from a group of Global Sumud ‘Gaza land flotilla’ activists detained last week in Sirte by Libya’s eastern authorities, who are being held at a police station in Benghazi “are in good condition”, Italy’s Consul General in the city, Filippo Colombo said after paying his first visit to the pair late Wednesday.
Colombo however asked local authorities for improvements for the detainees”also for the benefit of the other activists in the group of various nationalities who have requested assistance from Italy’s foreign ministry,” said the statement.
Eastern Libyan authorities have agreed to allow the detainees to shower, receive a change of clothes, and to receive better accommodation, according to the statement.
Colomo has not yet received information on the Italians’ possible deportation, which has been delayed by the Islamic Eid-al Adha (feast of sacrifice) holiday taking place in Libya from Wednesday through Friday, the statement said.
“Let’s hope they return home soon,” Tajani told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Rome on Wednesday.
The Italians area accused of entering Libya illegally and were part of a group of 10 activists involved in a ‘Land Convoy’ including an ambulance, that was seeking to get aid to blockaded Gaza over land, via Libya and Egypt after Israeli forces intercepted the 50-vessel Global Sumud flotilla in international waters last week, detaining more than 400 activists on board.
