(Adnkronos) – As Iran targeted a United States air base in Kuwait Thursday after the US claimed to have hit an alleged Iranian drone operation near the crucial Strait of Hormuz conduit – amid a shaky ceasefire agreed in early April – Europe worries that the three-month conflict in the region will not end “in the very near future,” Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani stated.
“Europe is concerned that a solution may not be reached in the very near future.” Tajani told reporters at a press conference in Limassol, Cyprus, where an informal European Union foreign ministers’ meeting is talking place.
Indian external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Saudi foreign minister Faisal bin Farhan are attending the meeting centred on the Middle East and Gulf conflict, which has escalated since the US and Israel begin targeted air strikes on Iran in late February.
“There is widespread concern regarding the Middle East, including from India and Saudi Arabia,” Tajani continued.
“The concern is that things may not move forward very quickly, although we are all working towards that goal,” he underlined.
US president Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed the war will soon end, but told reporters at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday he was not yet satisfied by the negotiations with Iran and that one of Tehran’s key demands – easing sanctions – was not on the table.
