(Adnkronos) – Diplomacy is the only way to resolve the “tense” situation in the Middle East amid a shaky ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the continuing US-Israel war on Iran and the closure of the key Strait of Hormuz waterway, Italy said on Wednesday.
“As we know, the situation remains tense. We continue to insist that the solution must be a diplomatic one and will renew our appeals to all sides to work towards this goal,” foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday.
“I will speak with Israel’s foreign minister (Gideon Saar) to gain a better understanding of the situation. However, we must move forward to strengthen the ceasefire and reach an accord between Iran and the United States,” Tajani continued.
“Otherwise, the situation can only get worse,“ said Tajani in remarks to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Rome.
“I am concerned about Hormuz and the economic consequences,” Tajani said.
Tajani was replying to a question on Israel’s claim that his killed the leader of Hamas’s military wing in Gaza, Mohammed Odeh in an air strike in the northern part of the coastal strip on Tuesday. The attack came days after Israel killed Odeh’s predecessor as it steps up military pressure on Gaza and expands operations against pro-Iran militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon.
