Yomiuri Giants Manager Abe Arrested for Assaulting Daughter

25 Maggio 2026

Tokyo, May 26 (Jiji Press)–Tokyo police arrested Shinnosuke Abe, manager of the Yomiuri Giants, a Japanese professional baseball team, on Monday for allegedly assaulting his 18-year-old daughter at their home in Shibuya Ward of the Japanese capital. Abe, 47, who was apprehended at his home, admitted to the allegation against him, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. The daughter suffered no injury from the incident. Abe was released early Tuesday. The MPD will continue investigations on a voluntary basis, planning to send his case to public prosecutors. In addition to Abe and the daughter, his wife and the couple’s 15-year-old daughter were at home at the time of the incident, according to the police. Abe told the police that he committed acts such as pushing down the 18-year-old daughter after having an argument with her as he tried to stop a quarrel between the daughters. He was drunk at the time. Right after his arrest, Abe told police officers that he got angry because the elder daughter argued back after he told her to be quiet. He also showed an attitude of reflecting on his behavior, according to the police. Abe did not use violence against the younger daughter. The case came to light as police received an emergency call shortly after 7 p.m. Monday from a child consultation center reporting the incident. Toru Kunimatsu, president of the Giants operator, released a statement saying: “Violence can never be tolerated, so we take the incident very seriously. We apologize to all fans and people related to professional baseball.” “We will consider action against Abe, including his possible dismissal,” Kunimatsu added. Abe, a native of Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, joined the Giants as the first draft pick in 2000. He played mainly as a catcher for the Central League team, whose home stadium is Tokyo Dome, until retiring as a player in 2019. Abe began to head the first team of the Giants, a member of the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization, or NPB, from the 2024 season. The latest incident came a day before the start of this season’s NPB interleague games. The Giants said that offence head coach Hideki Hashigami will serve as acting manager from Tuesday’s game.
