(Adnkronos) – The license for Bilgi University in Istanbul has been revoked. In the middle of the academic year, a decision signed by Recep Tayyip Erdogan revokes the operating license of what is one of Turkey’s most renowned universities, effectively forcing the university to close with a decree published in the Official Gazette.
Founded twenty years ago, the university participates in the Erasmus program. Here, according to the university’s website, over 20,000 young people, both Turkish and foreign, study. The decree, official Turkish media report, refers to a legislative provision that allows for the closure of a private institution if “the expected level of education and training” is considered “insufficient.”
Since last year, local media recall, the university has been managed by a court-appointed administrator, after the group that controlled the university faced accusations of money laundering and tax fraud.
