Taiwan, investigation into chip ‘smuggling’ to China, 3 arrests

22 Maggio 2026

(Adnkronos) – In Taiwan, the island of chips, an investigation is underway into the smuggling by protagonists of the new era. Destination Hong Kong, perhaps even China. A new inquiry shakes Taipei, while the spotlight remains on the island due to the “pause” in military supplies from the United States and Donald Trump’s words. Three Taiwanese citizens were arrested yesterday on suspicion of falsifying documents to ‘export’ from the island – and deliver to Hong Kong, a former British colony increasingly within Beijing’s orbit, and possibly even to China – servers equipped with Nvidia chips, among the most advanced chips, reports the Cna agency, citing news confirmed by the Keelung District Prosecutor’s Office. In the middle of the ‘story’, there is also Macao. All in violation of export regulations.

The three, according to Taiwanese authorities as reported by local media, knew that exports to China of servers from the American company Super Micro Computer are subject to strict controls by the United States, also due to the presence of advanced Nvidia chips. The three allegedly purchased dozens of AI servers in Taiwan and then shipped them to Hong Kong from a port in the north of the island. They also allegedly falsified the product description and made false declarations about the shipment’s destination, indicating a country in Northeast Asia.

According to reports from Taiwanese media, more than ten AI servers were allegedly shipped to Hong Kong via another country, but it is not yet clear whether the servers eventually reached China. The buyers are reportedly from China, Hong Kong, and Macao. Taiwan, a world leader in semiconductor manufacturing, is home to giants like TSMC and Foxconn. Xi Jinping’s China considers Taiwan, which is de facto independent, part of its territory, to be “reunified.”
