DR Congo, M23 reports ‘first Ebola case in South Kivu, 28-year-old dead’

21 Maggio 2026

(Adnkronos) – A first case of Ebola virus transmission has been confirmed in South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in an area – in the east of the country – under the control of the armed group M23. This was announced by a group spokesperson in a statement released this morning. So far, no cases had been confirmed in South Kivu. The epidemic is ‘concentrated’ in Ituri, in the northeast of the country, and cases have been reported in neighboring North Kivu, also in the east.

Analysis results “confirm a new positive case concerning a sample that arrived from Bukavu,” in South Kivu, “a person from Kisangani,” in Tshopo province, in the east, where no cases have been reported so far, said M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka. “The person, a 28-year-old compatriot, unfortunately died before the diagnosis was confirmed,” he added, stating that the young man’s body was “buried with the utmost respect for safety standards.”

Bukavu has been in the hands of the M23 since February last year.
