To Compile Extra Budget amid Inflation: Takaichi

18 Maggio 2026

Tokyo, May 18 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Monday that her administration is considering compiling a supplementary budget for fiscal 2026 amid prolonged inflation. At a liaison meeting between the government and the ruling coalition at the prime minister’s office, Takaichi said she has instructed the finance minister to come up with fiscal measures including an extra budget to “minimize risks” arising from price hikes. The prime minister wants to increase the government’s reserve funds with a view to reviving programs to curb rising electricity and gas bills in July-September and sustaining the subsidies for oil wholesalers to limit pump price increases, people familiar with the matter said. As of the end of April, the remaining funds for government subsidies totaled about 980 billion yen. Without replenishment through the formulation of an extra budget, the funds will run out by summer, many lawmakers warn. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
