Downing Street, no timetable for Starmer’s resignation, no leadership race

18 Maggio 2026

(Adnkronos) – No timetable has been set for Keir Starmer to relinquish his premiership. This was reiterated by a Downing Street spokesperson, following reports in the newspapers over the weekend that the Prime Minister was considering setting a date for his resignation.

“Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was very clear this morning. There is no timetable. The goal is to act for the British people. That is the job” to be done, a spokesperson said. “The Prime Minister is fully focused on delivering change for working people,” he added, referring to last week’s King’s Speech, in which five new bills and new measures to address youth justice were announced. “The government is getting on with its work.”

Asked about Wes Streeting’s statement, who announced his intention to run in a potential leadership election against Starmer, the spokesperson added: “There is no leadership contest.” The Prime Minister is diligently carrying out his work. “There is no race and we must focus on delivering results for the British people, which the Prime Minister is doing.”
