(Adnkronos) – The National Executive Committee of the Labour Party has approved the request of Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to stand in the candidate selection process for the upcoming Makerfield by-election. According to Labour Party rules, incumbent mayors need the approval of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to stand for Westminster. Burnham, as mayor, still has two years left in his term, and if he were to run, a by-election would be necessary for the position of mayor in Greater Manchester.
In February, Burnham’s candidacy had been rejected by the NEC. If he returns to Parliament, Burnham could challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the leadership of the party and the government.
