UK, ex-deputy PM Rayner cleared in tax scandal, running for Labour leadership?

14 Maggio 2026

(Adnkronos) – The former British deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has been cleared by tax authorities in relation to proceedings opened for wrongdoing concerning the payment of house taxes, a circumstance that could pave the way for her to run for the Labour leadership, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer is increasingly in difficulty. This is revealed by the Guardian, according to which Rayner settled £40,000 in unpaid stamp duty after initially paying a lower rate, but did not face any penalties following the investigation. The British tax agency also determined that there had been no tax evasion.

Speaking to the newspaper, Rayner stated that she had been “hurt” by the entire experience due to the intrusion into her disabled son’s private life, while it had seemed that she was “only interested in herself” rather than people’s problems. The former deputy prime minister is considered among the favorites for a potential succession to the Labour leadership after the heavy defeat in the local elections in recent weeks and as pressure on Starmer to resign grows.
